The Letters in ‘Frankenstein’

Describe Robert Walton: personality, desires, narrative voice.

Record your initial impressions of Victor Frankenstein.

What parallels have you noticed between the two characters thus far?

Robert Walton: an Englishman with a strong desire to reach the North Pole to discover some land that has not yet been discovered by any other human before. He wants to be the first to do something. He is also hopelessly romantic and has equally strong desires to share an intimate relationship with another man. In the letters he is the narrator of his voyage North and shares the narrative from his perspective writing to his close sister who still lives in England.

My impressions of Dr. Frankenstein: he seems a very harrowed man who is resigned to his fate that looms in the future. He has a paranoia about new people and the creature that was observed before he was hauled on board and has a strong desire to find the creature again. He is already developing a strong platonic/romantic relationship with Walton which suggests that he has been quite lonely for a long period of time.

Both characters are those who seem quite lonely in their existence, they also both have burning desires to achieve a personal goal. This ambition unites them together and allows them to find common grounds for their relationship.
